The Asian Art Museum of San Francisco is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. The museum's new home (the former SF Main Library) at Civic Center opened in 2003.

But we are more than just an art museum--we are your ticket to Asia. Here, you will travel through 6,000 years of history, trek across seven major regions, and sample the cultures of numerous countries.

THE COLLECTION

More than 2,500 extraordinary works from the museum’s collection are displayed in the museum’s permanent galleries. Artworks on view include monumental South Asian stone sculptures, luminous Chinese jades, vibrant Korean paintings, mystical Tibetan thangkas, serene Cambodian Buddhas, richly decorated Islamic manuscripts, and subtle Japanese ceramics.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS

The museum hosts special exhibitions every year, showcasing both classical art and works by contemporary Asian artists. Past exhibitions include The "Kingdom of Siam: The Art of Central Thailand;" "Geisha: Beyond the Painted Smile;" and "Hidden Meanings: Symbolism in Chinese Art."

Art comes alive at the museum! Experience firsthand the cultures of Asia through a diverse range of programs and events for all ages. You can participate in a tea ceremony, attend a live performance, create a piece of original art, and much more.

FREE audio guide tours available in English, Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Cantonese. FREE docent tours take place daily. Private guided tours available for groups of 10 or more.

Cafe Asia serves creative pan-Asian dishes with rotating daily specials. The museum store offers a variety of Asian-themed merchandise. Admission to the museum is not required to visit Cafe Asia and the museum store.
